Workplace Injuries:
More Common Than You Think
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), is a type of soft tissue injury caused by cumulative trauma and overuse. In an RSI, muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and/or fascia become irritated and inflamed. This can cause pain that disrupts an employee’s ability to perform the duties of their job. At Advanced Muscle Therapy in Fernandina Beach, FL, our therapists employ Active Release Techniques to decrease pain and impairment, returning people to work faster.
Causes of RSI
RSI can be caused by repetitive acts with many small, rapid movements, insufficient rest time between the repetitive tasks, working in awkward positions for extended periods, and repeated forceful movements to move loads or execute accelerated actions.
Examples of RSIs include carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, rotator cuff syndrome, trigger finger, and more.
Billion Dollars per Year
Impact of RSI on Businesses
Repetitive Strain Injury accounts for more than 67% of all occupational injuries. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 260,000 carpal tunnel release operations are performed each year. Forty-seven percent are considered work-related. Repetitive strain injuries cost more than $110 billion per year in medical costs, lost wages, and decreased productivity. RSI cases account for one out of every $3 spent on workers’ compensation. Employers spent $50.8 billion in 2003 on wage payments and medical care for workers hurt on the job; 47.9 percent of workers compensation losses came from overexertion (34.4 percent) and repetitive motion (13.5 percent). That’s $24.3 billion of the $50.8 billion, and this figure doesn’t include loss of productivity. The total employer cost for workers’ compensation in 2003 was $81.7 billion, and in 2004 the cost was $87.4 billion that’s a 7 percent increase. Repetitive motion injuries result in the longest absences from work, a median of 23 days per injury.
